Members’ Motions

Members’ motions, formerly known as “motions from the floor”, are formalized requests by members asking AIBC Council to give consideration to some issue or decision relating to professional matters, including regulation of the profession. Motions are put forth for a vote by the gathered membership at a Members’ Forum, held after the AIBC Annual Meeting. A simple majority vote of members present is needed for a motion to be “supported” and directed to council for consideration. While such motions are not binding upon AIBC Council, they do provide council with valuable feedback, information and direction to guide its decision-making.

As noted in the annual meeting mail-out distributed recently to all members and in subsequent editions of eNews, this year’s Members’ Forum will take place on Tuesday, May 24, 2011, starting at 4:10 p.m., immediately following the 2011 Annual Meeting. Those wishing to bring forth motions for consideration at the forum are request to submit their draft motion by May 17, 2011, in order that they may be reviewed and cleared by the institute’s Motions Review Committee, then shared with members by posting on the AIBC web site prior to the forum. To assist in properly formulating a motion, you are encouraged to use the template provided as part of the Members’ Forum Protocols. Please direct submissions to the attention of AIBC Executive Director Michael Ernest MAIBC (mernest@aibc.ca).

Motions Received for 2011 Members’ Forum
Motions listed below are intended for discussion during the 2011 Members’ Forum on May 24, having been reviewed and cleared by the Motions Review Committee.  AIBC members are encouraged to attend the forum to take part in discussions of  these and other matters of current interest to the institute and the profession. Those motions that receive member support at the forum will be directed to AIBC Council for consideration.   Note: supported motions are advisory only, and do not bind AIBC Council nor the institute to a course of action.

The order of members’ motions to be considered will be determined by the Motions Review Committee, which will also oversee the management of the motions segment of the Members’ Forum to help ensure constructive, civil debate and discussion.
