2010 Annual Meeting
The 91st Annual Meeting of the AIBC was conducted successfully on Saturday, May 8, 2010 at the Vancouver Convention Centre. Draft minutes of that meeting are now available on-line. Members are encouraged to read these minutes, bearing in mind that, as per standard procedure, a motion to officially adopt them will be made at the next annual meeting, during the AIBC/RAIC Festival from May 24 through May 27, 2011. In the interest of providing some key information quickly, especially for those who were unable to attend, here are some highlights. Note that additional, related information is available in the 2009 Annual Report.
- The minutes of the 90th Annual Meeting (2009) were approved as submitted.
- Members elected Paul Fast P.Eng and Gerald Epp P.Eng as Honorary Members.
- Five architects were elected to AIBC Council: MAIBCs Pierre Gallant, Veronica Gillies, Joan Hendriks, Gord Richards and Lynne Werker.
- Four non-voting liaisons to council were appointed: associates Dave Boswell (Building/Residential Designers), Michael Currie (Architectural Technologists) and Nathaniel Nacionales (Intern Architects); and Keath Seeton (Interior Design Institute of B.C.
Council heard nine advisory (i.e. non-binding) “motions from the floor” for its consideration, four of which were carried. Council has since given its consideration to those four motions, the results of which will be communicated shortly under separate cover. Three additional advisory motions were received but not discussed due to time constraints. Council has undertaken to look at them and respond at a later date.
During the course of the meeting, some members made statements and raised questions warranting responses from an operational (staff) perspective. Those responses are under preparation and will be shared with the membership in the near future.
As a summary (positive) observation, the membership in attendance clearly chose to have the meeting conducted (and to conduct itself) professionally and collegially. Associates, on two occasions, spoke constructively and were supported. The business at hand was concluded on time, with ample opportunity for provocative, respectful debate. The converse, of course, has no legitimate place in our gatherings or dialogue and was demonstrably not tolerated by the assembly.
Best wishes to all of you and your families as we are finally embraced by summer.

Michael A. Ernest MAIBC
Executive Director
