The Oral Assessment is an interview conducted by a panel of three AIBC members. During the Oral Assessment, you will be asked to demonstrate your equivalencies for education, experience and examination in lieu of the formal experience and examination requirements of the AIBC’s Intern Architect Program (IAP). The intent is to graphically demonstrate ones understanding of the role and responsibilities of an architect, from schematic design to occupancy. You will be expected to bring three projects, at least one of which must be local, in order to demonstrate your level of involvement in each project. Assessments usually take between one and one-and-a-half hours to complete. This is a relatively short period of time in which to convey a lot of information, so it is to your benefit to have a well organized and complete portfolio.
The Oral Assessment panel will evaluate your application and make specific recommendations regarding your possibilities for registration and further requirements, where applicable. In doing so, the panel will bear in mind the existing standards for British Columbia Intern Architects (IAs), including the Architect Registration Examination (ARE). The nine divisions of the ARE reflect the basic knowledge all would-be architects are expected to have prior to undertaking the practice of architecture in the absence of direct supervision of a registered architect.
