Who We Are

The Architectural Institute of British Columbia (AIBC) is a self-governing body dedicated to excellence in the profession of architecture for the benefit of society, the environment and its membership. The AIBC is responsible for registering and regulating architects throughout British Columbia. Through its many professional programs, partnerships and community initiatives, the organization also strives to be an ambassador on behalf of the profession and its practitioners in BC.

Registering as an Architect in British Columbia
The legislation governing architects in British Columbia sets out the ways in which a person can become registered and practice architecture in the province. While most people will become registered through a combination of formal education, experience and examination requirements, the legislation does allow the AIBC to register persons with alternative qualifications gained through broadly experience or foreign training combined with experience. This requires a demonstration of equivalency to the formal AIBC standards of education, experience and examination.

Maintaining Architectural Registration in British Columbia
In order to maintain registration as an architect in British Columbia, architects must demonstrate ongoing professional development by acquiring a minimum 18 learning credits per year. These learning units (LUs) are granted in recognition of specific course/event attendance and participation. For more information, please contact the AIBC Professional Development Department at (604) 683-8588.
