For immediate release
This February, the Architectural Institute of British Columbia will feature a special gallery exhibit that showcases the involvement of British Columbia architects in bringing the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games to life. The exhibit, titled BienVenue: 2010 Games Architecture, will offer a unique behind-the-scenes glimpse of the design process involved in creating games-related venues.
BienVenue: 2010 Games Architecture will feature both competition and non-competition venues, 20 in total, including sport facilities, athlete accommodations, training centres, and cultural pavilions.
“B.C.’s architectural community has made a significant contribution to the success of the 2010 Games,” explains AIBC Council President Pierre E. Gallant MAIBC MRAIC. “Not only that, but these facilities are going to be welcome additions to our communities long after the competitions have ended and the medals handed out. Through this exhibit, people will be able to see the creativity and innovation behind these world-class venues.”Featured competition venues include:
Featured non-competition venues include:
The exhibition will allow visitors and locals alike to view the games from a distinctly architectural perspective. “While each project is unique in its design and purpose, there is a distinctly West Coast architectural style that comes through,” explains AIBC Executive Director Michael Ernest MAIBC. “In addition, B.C. architects are leading the way when it comes to such things as sustainability and environmental sensitivity in urban design. This exhibition, and the games themselves, is an opportunity for them to show their stuff.”
A public opening reception will be held on Thursday, February 11, 2010, 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. Advance reservations are required; please e-mail (communications@aibc.ca). The AIBC’s Architecture Centre Gallery is located at #100 - 440 Cambie Street, Vancouver. It is open to the public 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday to Friday. Heavy traffic, road closures, and extensive visitor activity are expected in Vancouver's downtown core throughout the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games. Please plan ahead, as parking and traffic routes will be restricted.
