Intern Architect Resources
Overview of the Intern Architect Program: An Intern Architect is an individual whose education has been certified by the Canadian Architectural Certification Board and who has been accepted into the Internship in Architecture Program (IAP) of the Institute. Intern Architects work towards completing the post-graduate requirements (continuing education, experience and examination) of the Internship in Architecture Program in order to become registered as an architect in British Columbia. An Overview of the Architectural Registration Process Regulation of the profession of architecture in Canada, including the registration/licensing of architects, is the responsibility of each province through the self-regulating associations established to govern the profession. All provincial associations have adopted Common Admission Standards regarding Education, Experience and Examination, to facilitate reciprocal licensing/registration from province to province. In British Columbia the requirements of registration through Internship are documented in the nationally accepted Internship in Architecture Program Manual, as well as Appendix B, British Columbia Requirements. Architectural education may be obtained through a number of acceptable means. The AIBC has agreed to the education requirements detailed in the Conditions and Procedures for Accreditation of university schools of architecture and in the Canadian Education Standard, administered by the Canadian Architectural Certification Board (CACB). Individuals wishing to pursue a career in architecture obtain acceptable architectural education by enrolling in:
These programs typically require between five and ten years of post-secondary education. Upon graduation, the next step to becoming licensed to practice architecture in the Province of British Columbia is to have your education and academic history certified by the Canadian Architectural Certification Board (CACB). Application forms and information may be downloaded from the CACB web site at www.cacb.ca and any questions regarding the application form or the requirements to be certified in Canada should be directed to the CACB in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. Telephone: 1-613-241-8399; Fax: 1-613-241-7991 or info@cacb.ca. Your application form and accompanying information is processed and verified by the CACB. Applicants may be interviewed by a committee to review their education, courses and portfolio work from their school years if they do not have a degree from an accredited school of architecture. Upon completion of this verification process, successful applicants will be assigned a certification number. Transfer from Other Provincial Associations Interns who have participated in the IAP in other provinces (or the Intern Development Program in the United States) will generally have obtained certification of their education. They may also have begun logging work experience and writing exams. Such Interns should request a transfer of their experience and examination records from their previous jurisdiction to the AIBC upon acceptance as an Intern Architect in British Columbia. The acceptance of common standards between the jurisdictions will mean that experience and exams obtained in other provinces and most U.S. states will be generally acceptable in BC, however, each file will be reviewed individually prior to approval. Interns transferring to BC should also review Appendix B carefully, to become familiar with the AIBC's specific provincial requirements for registration.
