Temporary Licence
Out-of-Province Architects Providing or Promoting Architectural
Services In British Columbia
Architects registered in jurisdictions other than BC wishing to
apply for a temporary licence should read AIBC
Bulletin 22 carefully, print out the application
form (found at the end of Bulletin 22) and submit it to the AIBC
along with the applicable signatures and fees (see AIBC bulletin
01 "Fees, Fines and Charges"). As the first step, architects registered
elsewhere wishing to offer architectural services or respond to
a proposal must also submit a letter of intent to the AIBC prior
to doing so, as per Bulletin 22.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: I have recently been informed about a project in British Columbia.
Our interest would be to provide programming, design direction, and reviews.
We would strongly recommend local presence as the architect of record.
Before I enter into dialogue pertaining to the project and our abilities,
I want to better understand the licensing procedures and reciprocity
requirements.
A: The answer to your question, is that you can either:
(1) register
fully and obtain a certificate of practice, or
(2) collaborate with
a B.C. architect and obtain a temporary licence.
You can obtain a temporary licence usually within 2 weeks once the AIBC receives
all paperwork and fees (including confirmation of registration paperwork
from your jurisdiction).
Registering through reciprocity from another Canadian province or by inter-recognition from the United States is usually quite straightforward,
however, it may take up to 6 weeks as the application has to be approved
by the Registration and Licensing Board and ratified by Council. You must then apply for a
Certificate of Practice. [In addition, please note that continuing
education requirements are now in effect for all AIBC members.]
For more information about reciprocal licensing, refer to AIBC Bulletin
11 and Bulletin 13. The application forms are available in the registration section under the Registrant Resources tab.
