Architectural Technologist Program

If you have graduated with a diploma or certificate in Architectural Technology and/or Building Engineering Technology, or if you are pursuing the seven-year experience-only route towards certification, you should apply to the AIBC for membership as an Intern Architectural Technologist. You will find the application package below. The current process is:

1.) Apply as an Intern Architectural Technologist;

2.) Upon eligibility, write the Architectural Technologist (AT) Examination held at the AIBC offices in April and October of each year (see below for the three categories of eligibility);

3.) Having successfully passed the AT examination, your status changes to that of Architectural Technologist or AT.AIBC (see “Exam Information” for details about the examination).

Category 1

Graduation from an AIBC-approved two-year technology diploma program (such as the BCIT Architectural and Building Engineering Technology Diploma Program) or equivalent.

Letters of employment demonstrating two years of related work experience (At least one year of this period must be under the direct supervision of an MAIBC. One year may be industry-related experience.).

Category 2

Graduation from an AIBC-approved one-year certificate program or the equivalent.

Letters of employment demonstrating five years of related work experience (At least three years of this period must be under the direct supervision of an architect. Two years may be industry-related experience not under the direct supervision of an architect.).

Category 3

Letters of employment demonstrating seven years of related work experience under the direct supervision of an MAIBC.

When you apply to become an Intern Architectural Technologist, you shall provide evidence of your educational qualifications and evidence of any architectural work experience you have had after graduation. Your education and experience will be reviewed, and you will be advised if you are eligible to write the examination. If you are not yet eligible for the examination, you will be informed how much more education or experience you require.
